Kane Street Synagogue

Social Action

The Social Action Committee plans and organizes short- and long-term volunteer opportunities for synagogue members in the local community and beyond. The Social Action Committee is dedicated to "tikkun olam" (repair of the world) and addresses issues such as homelessness, hunger, visiting the elderly and the sick.

Our social action projects include:

Brooklyn Heights Synagogue Homeless Shelter.  Volunteer to stay overnight or prepare dinner in your home and deliver it to 10-12 homeless women. The shelter is open from November to March. Kane Street congregants are scheduled over a two-week block, but volunteers are needed at other times as well.

Holiday Packages for Homebound Elderly. Help assemble and deliver packages at Rosh Hashana, Hanukah and other holidays.

Visiting the Elderly at the Cobble Hill Health Center.  Kane Street member Bob Marx has been organizing monthly Shabbat visits to the nursing home for 20 years (!). Join him as he spends an hour with nursing home residents on Shabbat mornings, 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM, singing, schmoozing, and generally having a good time. To see the Cobble Hill Health Center Visiting Schedule click here. The Center is located at 380 Henry Street (corner of Congress).

Telephone English Language Campanion. Help a recent Russian immigrant practice speaking English and prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam, a five- to fifteen-minute commitment three times a week for three months. Once matched, volunteers and clients receive a copy of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society's Guide to U.S. Citizenship.  Sponsored by Jewish Board for Children and Family Services and the NY Association for New Americans. Orientation and support provided by JBCFS.

Blood drives

Pesach food drive

"Meals on Heels," a program of Heights and Hill Coalition. Volunteers are needed weekdays from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm to deliver lunch to homebound elderly neighbors in Brooklyn Heights.
