Kane Street Synagogue

Shabbat

“May our rest on the Shabbat day be one of love and devotion, peace and tranquility, quietness and confidence...” (from the Shabbat Afternoon Service)

On Shabbat, Friday night and Saturday, we leave the stress and competition of the week behind. Our community joins in song and reflection, led by lay leaders of our Synagogue and our Rabbi. The Jewish Week captured the spirit of Shabbat at Kane Street (article).

Services in the Main Sanctuary (236 Kane Street):

  • Fri. evening at 6:00 PM followed by Oneg and refreshments. Once a month, we have Friday night dinner together in the synagogue's beautiful new Goldman Center.

  • Sat. morning at 9:30 AM, followed by Kiddush and refreshments

  • Sat. afternoon/evening, 75 minutes before conclusion of Shabbat.  Mincha-maariv services, reading from the Torah portion of the coming week, and text study.

Children's Services
Every Shabbat, except on public holiday weekends, we offer three children's services. They are free and open to non-members as well as members. Parents are always welcome to join in any of our children's services. Please click here to download our brochure on upcoming Family & Children's Programs, including information on our Shabbat Children's Services.

Mini Minyan (for children 2-5 years old and their parents)
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM, classroom 5/6
During this service, the children join in Shabbat songs, simple prayers, and Torah stories. The service ends with a snack kiddush.

Junior Congregation (for grades K-3)
11:00 AM - 12:00 noon, classroom 3
A spirited youth service for children in Kindergarten through Third Grade. Students are invited to not only participate in this service, but also to lead the prayers in which they are comfortable. The Parsha Ha-Shava (weekly Torah portion) is taught in a fun and interactive manner.

Shabbat Morning Kavanna and Competence Minyan (for grades 4-6)
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM, classroom 4
Kavannah (literally, intention) refers to the inner joy and insight which the worshipper feels during prayer. By competence, we mean knowledge of the Synagogue customs and the meanings and melodies of the prayers. This service is geared for fourth through sixth graders. During this service, the students are encouraged to lead the majority of the prayers. The Parsha Ha-Shavua (weekly Torah portion) is taught in a fun and interactive manner. The meanings and melodies of the Shabbat morning prayers are explored.

*Babysitting is provided from 10AM - 1PM every Shabbat except on public holiday weekends.

Talmud Study Circle (every Shabbat following Kiddush)
A great way to honor the Shabbat and increase your knowledge at the same time.   We are studying the Mishnayot of the first Order of the Talmud, Zeraim (Seeds), in both Hebrew and English.  The discussion is - like the Talmud - far-ranging, deep, fun, and intellectually stimulating.   Unlike the Talmud, the discussions are in English!  All levels are welcome, no previous background or knowledge of Hebrew necessary.  We meet in the sanctuary after Kiddush on Shabbat mornings.

Improve Your Prayerbook Hebrew (every Shabbat, 10:30-11:45 A.M.)
Reading Hebrew is the key to synagogue participation. This course makes students more comfortable at services. Teacher: Bob Marx.

Torah Portion Study Group on Shabbat
Probe the themes and moral issues of the weekly Torah portion with discussion leader Jenny Brooks. Texts are studied in translation.  Saturdays, 10:45 AM

Havdalah Program
Family-friendly, spirited Havdalah service complete with music, singing, dancing and Pizza on three Saturday evenings this winter. It's a warm, fun way to say good-bye to Shabbat.
Dates: December 16, January 20, February 17.
Open to the general community
