We believe that the State of Israel is a modern miracle and testament to Jewish commitment. Our Israel Committee supports the material well-being and morale of Israelis, bolsters our community’s identification with Israel, and promotes an understanding of Israel in Brooklyn and New York. We show our support for and love of Israel in a myriad of ways, both as a community and as individuals.

Ongoing Projects of the Israel Matters at Kane Street Committee:
Monthly Speakers
Recent speakers have included Ambassador Dennis Ross (co-sponsored with AIPAC); MJ Rosenberg, Director of Policy for the Israel Policy Forum; Rabbi Elisha Wolfin, an Israeli Masorti rabbi; and David Twersky, Director of International Programs at the American Jewish Congress.
Support for the Needy in Israel
The Israel Committee sponsors hot meals for students in a Bayit Cham (Warm House), an afternoon enrichment center for pre-school children in a disadvantaged neighborhood of South Tel Aviv-Yaffo. Among other fundraising efforts, we raised money for the Bayit Cham with a successful auction of Israeli jewelry, wine, books and other items, all of which were purchased in Israel by member Jonathan Katz, using funds donated by the congregation.
Visits to Israel
Kane Street members regularly visit Israel on Jewish federation-sponsored missions and on their own to visit family and friends, to enjoy the beauty of the country, and to deepen our connection to the Jewish homeland. Shortly after the beginning of the current intifada, Rabbi Sam Weintraub and several Kane Street members were the backbone of a UJA solidarity trip to Israel. (Click here to read the Jewish Week article about the mission.) Since then, dozens of our members have traveled to Israel. Recent photos of and by our members in Israel are proudly displayed in our synagogue lobby.
Other programs sponsored by our community include Israel Independence Day activities and participation in broader community coalitions in support of Israel.
